Your age: rok, lata or lat
“Ile masz lat?” is answered with “Mam … lat”, but the word for years has three forms. The last digit decides, with 12–14 as the exception: 22 takes lata, 12 takes lat.
| Number | Polish | rok / lata / lat |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mam rok. | rok |
| 2 | Mam dwa lata. | lata |
| 4 | Mam cztery lata. | lata |
| 5 | Mam pięć lat. | lat |
| 12 | Mam dwanaście lat. | lat |
| 18 | Mam osiemnaście lat. | lat |
| 21 | Mam dwadzieścia jeden lat. | lat |
| 22 | Mam dwadzieścia dwa lata. | lata |
| 25 | Mam dwadzieścia pięć lat. | lat |
| 34 | Mam trzydzieści cztery lata. | lata |
| 40 | Mam czterdzieści lat. | lat |
| 45 | Mam czterdzieści pięć lat. | lat |
Prices: złoty, złote, złotych
Złoty and grosz follow the same three-form rule as lat. At the till nobody says the currency: 12,50 zł is just “dwanaście pięćdziesiąt”.
| In full | At the till | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 zł | jeden złoty | — |
| 2 zł | dwa złote | — |
| 5 zł | pięć złotych | — |
| 12,50 zł | dwanaście złotych pięćdziesiąt groszy | dwanaście pięćdziesiąt |
| 22,99 zł | dwadzieścia dwa złote dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć groszy | dwadzieścia dwa dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć |
| 0,50 zł | pięćdziesiąt groszy | — |
| 100 zł | sto złotych | — |
A phone number
A Polish mobile number has nine digits, written in threes. Digit by digit is always understood; many Poles read it as three numbers instead, so be ready to hear both.
600 123 456
Digit by digit:
sześć zero zero jeden dwa trzy cztery pięć sześć
In threes, as many Poles say it:
sześćset, sto dwadzieścia trzy, czterysta pięćdziesiąt sześć
Hear a number, write it in digits
This is the skill a shop, a doctor's waiting room and a phone call actually test. Pick a range; the page says a number.
